Dancing the WMD Polka

So North Korea has come out and publicly admitted to having
developed nuclear weapons. And now, while the world is expressing its shock and dismay, I'm sure Washington is working very hard to suppress the urge to say, "I told you so."

This announcement in an indirect way vindicates the recent invasion of Iraq, doesn’t it? Whether or not WMD is ever found, the fact remains that Baghdad deliberately and repeatedly refused inspection of its facilities. There was some evidence that pointed to their production of WMD, and without verification to the contrary, it was necessary to ensure they wouldn’t.

For too long, the U.N. seems to spend every waking moment finding ways to blame the U.S. for all the world's woes. We’re too meddlesome. We should mind our own business. We’re just a big bully throwing our weight around, taking the world’s lunch money. They point to Iraq and say “Where’s the WMD?”

But now that North Korea has announced their nuclear capabilities, an interesting question comes to mind. Which is worse: That the U.S. invaded Iraq, and found no WMD, or that the U.N. continues to remain toothless, doing nothing about North Korea, and finding WMD in the hands of a dictator? And now perhaps most importantly, with the knowledge we now have, what is to be done with Iran? Do we wait until they also have developed nuclear arms, further destabilizing the region? Do we wait until the U.N. does something – anything? Do we make Iran into another Iraq before they become another North Korea?

I am not a proponent of invading every country who has designs on developing nuclear weapons. But Pyongyang is not the only threat to nuclear proliferation, and it's high time the U.N. Security Council gets off its lazy butt and starts doing its job. If the U.N. doesn’t want the U.S. taking care of thugs who threaten regional and even world peace, then they need to do the job themselves.

Somebody has to dance to the music.
