No Lasagna Tonight

The proposed 2006 budget is in, and the liberals are crying foul. No surprises there. After Clinton’s irresponsible fiscal policies set up the disaster we are now climbing out of, the Democrats have spent four years whining about the growing size of the deficit. Now, Bush has turned the economy around, and he is looking to rein the deficit back to a reasonable amount, and the Democrats are going to whine all the much more. So, how do we balance the budget without cutting spending? If you’re a liberal, you spend other people’s money.

This past year, our beloved Democrats have told us that:

  • Bush is not funding Homeland Security enough.

  • The troops in Iraq do not have the equipment they need.

  • Our deficit is growing and Bush is the culprit.

So, Bush has presented them a budget that increases Homeland Security funding, provides more funding for defense, and scales back overall spending to cut the deficit. Did they get what they want? Are they happy? No, because we’re not raising taxes. Let’s expose the Democrats’ agenda as what it is: nothing but grandstanding to make a good President look bad.

Personally, I think an increase in any budget is too much with the deficit we have, but I think Bush has done a decent job of spreading the pain around. You might want to cry that your favorite pet program is going to suffer, but let’s face facts: when you’re behind in the car payment, you don’t go out to the Olive Garden for dinner.

To be honest, I am of the opinion that there is so much waste in government, that if we cut all programs across the board by 15%, we could still provide all of the services we currently do. I don’t have any hard and fast numbers to prove this, and never could have them, but I can speak empirically. When there are people employed by governmental agencies who, at the end of every fiscal year, are out looking for ways to spend excess budgetary monies so that their budget is not reduced the following year, something is plainly wrong. And, I have seen this, in person.

You know, most of the time, it seems the Democrats want to have their cake and eat it, too. This year, they also want to eat your cake.

On a better note, I wanted to share with you an interesting web site I came across yesterday. The site is UpsideUSA, a conservative site founded by Warren Bauer, whose stated purpose is to “combat the persistent stream of misinformation presented in the major media.” I plan to be a frequent visitor – and contributor - and hope it can grow to a level that rivals MoveOn.
